Images are reviewed on certified 5-megapixel monitors, specially calibrated for mammography interpretations.
The procedure is a low exposure X-ray procedure that studies the breast for the early detection of breast cancer. At least two views of each breast and additional views for implant patients should be expected.
The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. The patient will be asked to change clothes and wear an exam gown.
There may be some discomfort with compression of the breast; however, there should be no bruising or abrasions during this exam. Your technologist will be experienced and fully certified, and will try and make the procedure as comfortable as possible without sacrificing accuracy.
Breast compression is unavoidable, as it allows for an even distribution of the X-ray beam to allow equal visualization of both the superficial and deep portions of the breast.
Please do not be alarmed if the technologist takes it upon his/herself to do additional views or recommends an ultrasound of the breast. This is standard protocol for their profession, which is to acquire a complete and thorough exam at your initial visit.
- Reports: You will be given a copy of the report through the mail in an envelope that you will fill out the day of your exam. Your physician will also get a report. The digital images will be made available to any physician of your request.
- Previous Mammograms: Prior mammograms are extremely important and are useful in making comparisons. Please inform us of when and where your prior mammogram was performed, so that we may acquire them for comparison in a timely manner.
- Second Opinions: We will be more than happy to review and provide additional reports for studies done at other facilities if you feel that this would give you peace of mind.
