My name is Lauren and this is my story…
After a year of suffering with lower back pain and seeing a number of doctors, I was diagnosed with a tumor attached to my spine and I needed surgery to remove it. I was only 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. It was at that time that I learned so many new words, words that I would continue to hear for the rest of my life. Those words include MRI, ependymoma, neurosurgeon, cerebral spinal fluid and Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital. I didn't realize just how much these words would become a part of my life.
I was referred to Dr. Thomas Bertuccini, who discussed my options with us. He recommended surgery to remove the tumor as soon as possible and he recommended LSSH. Since the hospital had only opened 8 months earlier we had not heard of it. Both my parents and I wanted to stay locally for the surgery and we did not have much time, so we trusted my doctor's recommendation and scheduled my surgery for two weeks later at LSSH.
My 10 hour surgery was done on September 14, 2004. My parents, grandmother, cousins and friends (at least 100 people in all) gathered that day. They were treated like family by the staff and were even given a private room for waiting because of the large number of people. My five day recovery stay was one I will never forget. The surgery was a success, and the nurses and staff were so professional and nice. They have become my friends, my mentors and it was then that I chose to pursue a career in Nursing.
Two years later when I was a Senior in high school, I was diagnosed with another tumor in my spinal canal. There was no doubt where I would choose to have my second surgery. The staff at LSSH had now become like family to me, and because of the amazing care I received on my first stay, I scheduled my second surgery at LSSH. By this time, all my family and friends referred to the LSSH as "Lauren's Hospital.” Once again, my visit there was awesome! I think the staff and nurses actually "spoiled” me.
I have been encouraged and inspired by all the medical professionals that I have met during the last six years. Today, I am a senior at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette majoring in Nursing. I still stop by to visit with my friends at LSSH and I hope to one day become an employee and work beside all the wonderful people there.
